September 4th the New York Times wrote about corruption in China, August 28th Bruce Nussbaum wrote about legal corruption in the United States. In Physics, objects at rest like to stay at rest and objects in motion like to stay in motion. I wonder if the Chinese people see their country in motion while Americans see their country at rest.
China is called a developing country, importantly that might also be a way of thinking. Government officials and citizens alike have experienced incredible change in their living conditions and relationship to their environment. At the same time corruption is a horrible problem in China, even inspiring a market for satirical literature in China according to Helen Wu. It is hard to deny the Chinese Communist Party has played a role in how people's lives have changed, although with much struggle. The party will likely continue to play a role if China stays in motion and accomplishes tasks like universal health care for 90% by 2011.
In the United States, a developed country, arguably the country in the 1950's, 60's and 70's settled into a lifestyle and relationship with its environment it desired complete with suburbs, an interstate system and health care from private insurance companies. While in China corruption might be accepted because China continues to stay in motion, in the United States legal corruption might be accepted because the country is understood to be at rest.
