The evening of May 1st I took the K51 train to the city of Rizhao in Shandong. After arriving in Shandong I realized I was the kind of foreigner that Wen Jiabao speaks of. During the People's Congress in March he said that if you have only gone to Beijing and Shanghai, you still have not seen China, you need to go see Western China. When I'm in the U.S. people ask me how China is. I say that I'm familiar with Beijing and Shanghai, but I still don't really know much about China. When I was talking to my parents on the phone (Skype)I said that arriving in Shandong made me uncomfortable. My Dad asked me why. I said it wasn't because I was a foreigner, but rather because I lived in Beijing and I was used to the big city life.
