Yesterday the Austrian Ambassador to Krakow said an interesting thing, Europe is past the Holocaust. The main issue for Europe now is Islam. This is particularly an interesting comment with Auschwitz lurking some two hours away by bus. It seems to be quite a powerful statement, yet it also shows quite a shift. The Holocaust was a time when up to 13 million individuals were killed in concentration camps, including 6 million Jews. Now is appears that Europe is shifting away from preventing another horror, to trying to grapple with in some ways another issue of the other, a potentially excluded group with the aid of the media. Particularly if one is to look at Germany, it can be quite difficult to have a sense of guilt and shame and desire to not repeat, yet at the same time not allow the Holocaust to be a weight that pushes one to the ground. I think that it can be quite problematic to simply suggest that Europe is moving from one to the other, but being in Europe for less than a week, it is hard for me to convincingly say one way or the other. +Chris Krakow Jul 12 07
