Last week I met an old classmate in a New York park. Because there were no public restrooms in the park, I noticed a man in front of us use a cup. I'm assuming this man was homeless and I don't think my classmate noticed, in part because the man put the cup inside his pants.
Last summer I met a classmate in Beijing who is studying public toilets. It seems that Beijing has a lot of public toilets. Many of the old Hutongs do not have bathrooms, so residents and street merchants both use the public toilets. I do not know if homeless can use the restrooms because I did not use many public toilets. Today this classmate told me that China has a play about public toilets and a character who explains the lessons he has learned from from the public toilets. In the United States websites can help people to find bathrooms, in libraries or fast food restaurants, etc. , might be thought of as the wonders of social media.
Arjuan Appadurai writes about those that live their entire lives on the streets of Mumbai, and they also don't have restrooms, instead using the streets they live on. My mom says that if the restroom in a restaurant is not clean, than the restaurant is not good and you shouldn't eat there. What does it say if a society does not have public restrooms?
