我问谁是翻译者?
The past year I have been learning how to speak and write Chinese (Mandarin), the last two months of which in Beijing. Studying Chinese has been a means to better understand how Americans and Chinese are trying to tackle the energy challenges of climate change. A recent blog entry by Aimee Barnes cites that 50,000 Americans are currently learning how to speak Chinese. But I and maybe others cannot speak or understand Chinese well. A question for me is, who are the translators? How do you know what you know about China, Japan or Germany?

Sociology argues that we are socialized by school, family, friends, work and media. In high school as my teacher lectured about China I slowly became more interested. In 2007 a Shanghai friend and I talked or perhaps debated, the first time we had met. Later the more I thought, the more I realized I needed to visit China myself and not to rely on media as my translator. My teacher and my friend were my translators.

After visiting China the first time I told friends and colleagues that China is working to address climate change. Every time I would hear, "I've seen pictures, China is so polluted, they have an environmental movement?" Ms. Christina Larson of Foreign Policy magazine presented this past Thursday (Sept. 3) on the sensationalism in the media and the challenge of explaining China to Washington, D.C. I would also like to explain China to D.C., but right now I am a poor translator.
